Annex 4. Intravenous fluids

The following table gives the composition of IV fluids that are commercially available and commonly used for neonates, infants and children. For a decision on which fluid to use in particular circumstances, see the disease-specific chapters, e.g. for shock see Chart 7 and Chart 8, for neonates see Section 3.10.2, for severely malnourished children see Section 7.4.3, for surgical procedures see Section 9.1.3 and for general supportive therapy see Chapter 10.2. Please note that none of the fluids contains sufficient calories for the long-term nutritional support of children, but that some fluids contain less than others. When feed and fluids can be given by mouth or nasogastric tube, this is the safest, preferable route.
